  1. Korea, once called the Hermit Kingdom, has a recorded history
  2. since the 1st Century BC.  It became united in 668 AD, under the
  3. Silla Dynasty and at times associated with the Chinese Empire. 
  4. In 1895 Korea gained complete independence and in 1910 joined
  5. Japan under its forcible annexation of the country as Chosun.  In
  6. July 1945, at the Postdam conference the 38th Parallel was
  7. designated as the line dividing the Soviet and American
  8. occupation.  The South Koreans formed the Republic of Korea in
  9. May 1948 with Seoul as the capital.  Dr. Syngman Rhee became
  10. President and was forced to resign on April 26, 1960 after
  11. student unrest.  In an army coup on May 16, 1961, General Park
  12. Chung Hee became chairman of the ruling junta and was eventually
  13. elected President.  Park was assassinated by the chief of the
  14. Korean CIA on October 26, 1979.  General Chun Doo Hwan quickly
  15. rose to power, reinstated martial law and reverted South Korea to
  16. a police state.  A Korean Air Lines passenger airliner was shot
  17. down by Soviet jet fighters on September 1, 1983 after straying
  18. into Soviet airspace.  All 269 people aboard died.  On June 10,
  19. 1987, thousands demonstrated against President Chun's decisions
  20. to appoint a successor to his Presidency and not allow free
  21. elections.  On July 1, 1987 Chun agreed to permit the free
  22. election of the next President.  South Korea hosted the 1988
  23. Olympic Games, the largest ever held.                     @
